How to add products in a Prestashop online store
Once the store installation is behind us, it is time to learn how to add products. A fresh installation contains sample data showing how the store works. Once the store installation is behind us, it is time to learn how to add products. A fresh installation contains sample data demonstrating how the store works. Among this data there are also sample products. The temptation immediately arises to delete these products and add your own. Before we do that, however, I recommend opening such a product for editing, if only for educational reasons, to see how the individual filled-in attributes look.
When the product database has been cleared, you can add your own products. In the ‘back office’ we go to ‘Catalog’ -> ‘Products’ and, in the top right corner, click ‘Add new product’. A multi-step form to fill in will appear. The most important thing to fill in on the first screen is the ‘Name’ field. It is also the only required field on the first screen. You can also tick whether the product should be enabled (this option is ticked by default). This can be useful when we want to add a product or a group of them in advance but plan to sell them only after some time, for example when they arrive or when their production ends. Later it is enough to change the option to ‘Enabled’.
In this window we also fill in the description. We have many tools available for this, including fonts, colors, photos or even videos. The last thing may be adding popular tags.
The next step in the form is ‘Prices’. Start by choosing the tax rule; in Poland that is 23%. Now, if we fill in the ‘Retail price (tax incl.)’ field, the ‘Pre-tax retail price’ field will be recalculated automatically. You can also set a price here for wholesale purchases.
Among the form tabs it is also worth visiting ‘Associations’. In this window we link the product to a category or to subcategories, because one product can be in several categories.
An important tab is ‘Quantities’. Here we enter how many units of the product are available for sale, and we can also set whether the store should allow orders when the product is out of stock. In addition, you can set the minimum quantity for which the item is to be available, and even what message should be displayed if it is unavailable.
The ‘Images’ tab lets you upload product photos. There can be several photos, and the main one must be marked with the ‘Cover’ option.
Now all that is left is to click the ‘Save’ button, and the product has been added and is visible in the store.
