How to add categories and show them in the main menu
In an earlier post I described how to add products to an online store. The next related step is creating categories for those products and building the menu. In one of the previous posts I described how to add products to an online store: link
The next related thing is creating categories for those products and building the menu in which they will appear. Categories are defined in the admin panel under the “Catalog” tab. A fresh template installation always contains a few sample categories. To create your own groups that fit the profile of your store, you can edit the existing ones or delete them and create everything from scratch.
Besides creating them, this tab of the panel is also where categories are managed. In the “position” column we can define in which place a given category is to be displayed. In the “displayed” column, whether the group is to be displayed at all, and finally in the last column, deleting or editing. Entering edit mode opens the same form as for creating a new category, only already filled in with the data collected earlier. So you can change things like the name, description, parent category, identifying image or a friendly URL that supports SEO. Going back to the last column of this tab: if “View” is displayed instead of the “Edit” button, it means that the category also has subcategories.
Once we have organized the product classes in our store, the next step is to link them together. To do this, we open the item for editing, then “Associations”, click “Expand all” and use a “checkbox” to tick the groups and subgroups it is to be assigned to.
To change the look of the main menu, we go to modules and services and look for the one responsible for the megamenu. On the right-hand side we click “Configure”. The current state of the menu items will be displayed. We can delete each item by clicking the “trash can” icon or edit it by clicking the “pencil” icon on the right. We can also add another item by clicking the “New menu item” button.
If it is to be a category, in the form on the right we fill in the “title” field, choose “Category” as the “type”, and below it we pick from the drop-down list the category this item is to be linked to.
